How You Can Make the May Spayathon a Success »

This year's big Spayathon will occur in May for the city of Botosani. We are looking to spay/neuter 1000 dogs during the course of two weeks. The cost for each procedure is only $22 per dog and your tax-deductible donation will save countless lives. Our recent Spay events in Tg. Jiu, Adjud, Tecuci, and Barlad have shown these towns that taking care of the strays in their neighborhoods resulted in reduced aggression in the dogs, better health for the dogs, and better health for the people. In May, Botosani will also know firsthand that spay/neuter will help the strays and their community live better lives. We are looking to you, our donors, to make this Botosani Spayathon a success. Please visit our donation page and sponsor a spay.

Dear Romania Animal Supporters »

Romania Animal Rescue spayed/neutered in Adjud, near Tecuci, at the end of April. Between 25-29 April, we headed to Barlad for Association Azorel to provide free spay/neuter for the animals in their city - thanks to donations from you! In May we are having our huge Spayathon in Botosani in coordination with Association ADOR. Romania Animal Rescue hopes to return to Galati in June to provide more free spay/neuters in that city if funding can be secured, and we have been asked to come to Jilava and Ploiesti as well. Busy time, spay/neuter needed everywhere! Your continued support for our programs for free spay/neuter, animal veterinary care and education is greatly needed for the animals' welfare! Thanks for your support for our programs!

Sincerely,
Nancy Janes,
President, CEO and Founder
Romania Animal Rescue, Inc.

Dear friends,

April was the month when RAR teams worked in 6 towns and operated on more than 600 animals. April 4th found me in Tg. Jiu operating on a shelter female dog and saving her life. After Tg. Jiu we arrived in Galati where we operated on 230 animals. At the end of April, we visited two towns that were expecting our help for a long time. It was amazing to see how people can organise themselves and bring 90 stray animals to the location where we were operating for only 2 days. Now we look forward to our Spayathon in Botosani where our team will make a great change for the better for the local stray animals. "No more strays" is the slogan we stand for and we mean it! Please be part of the change we generate for the stray animals. Please help us help the Romanian poor souls.

God bless you all,
Dr. Aurelian Stefan, D.V.M

Spay/Neuter Update »

129 spays/neuters in Barlad! 90 in Adjud!

Thank you Romania Animal Rescue vets Dr. Aurelian Stefan and Dr. Irina Corbu for your fabulous work once again to "Neuter or Spay! No More Strays!" The people in Romania want to do right by their animals, and thanks to donations from great people, we can make this happen. Thank you, wonderful supporters, for this invaluable help to the Romanian animals. Love, Nancy Janes

230 in Galati!

Between April 5-6, veterinarians Dr. Aurelian Stefan and Dr. Irina Corbu spayed/neutered 230 dogs and cats in Galati. The turnout and demand in Galati was enormous. The RAR team worked hard to keep up with the pets that the people brought to the clinic.

50 in Baia Mare! 50 in Iasi! 90 in Tg. Jiu!

Romania Animal Rescue was able to help in Baia Mare again, with 50 free spays done by the surgeon Dr. Florin-daniel Lucaciu of the Think Stray project. Dr. Lucaciu was trained by the Veterinary Training Camp on spay/neuter skills. It is wonderful that RAR can afford to do this to help in Baia Mare once again! They need lots of spay/neuter there.

The vets in Iasi provided 50 more free spays/neuters in Iasi in April once again, thanks to YOU!

In Tg. Jiu, Dr. Aurelian was able to spay/neuter 90 animals for Pro Animals Romania, as well as provide free surgery for a dog that had suffered in the hands of a poorly-skilled vet. Please support the Veterinary Training Program so that problems like this will not occur. Thank you!

Sibiu is the most recent city to join the educational booklet program. With Mayhew International sponsoring the printing and Animal Life Sibiu distributing the booklets to the schools, we have helped educate the Romanian school children on the benefits of animal welfare. Sibiu joins a growing number of school districts in Romania, such as Iasi, Baia Mare, Tecuci, Craiova, and Nicoresti, that have taken constructive measures for humans and animals to live in harmony.

Jilava Shelter »

Photos of how some puppies looked when they arrived at the Jilava shelter,
and how the same puppies looked in March 2012.

The Jilava shelter is looking to:

  • Spay/neuter 70 dogs at their shelter;
  • Spay/neuter 40 stray dogs near the shelter; and
  • Train the local veterinarian on modern spay/neuter procedures.

Roxana Chirita, Adina Enache, Ana Maria Hutu met the owner of Jilava's shelter, and offered ideas to improve the shelter. They cleared out a lot of the dangerous construction material stored at the shelter, and started treating the animals with vaccinations, dewormers, and feeding them regularly.

The food we provided to them each day these past 8 months helped the dogs to get rid of demodex and to look and feel much better. We are looking to raise $1500 to train the local veterinarian on using modern spay/neuter procedures. Your donation will help keep the stray animal population from getting worse in Jilava. Romania Animal Rescue hopes to go to Jilava as soon as funding can be secured to spay/neuter 100+ animals ($2200). Thank you.

Desperate Greekies »

This year, Animal Spay Neuter, International financed the cost of airfare (over $800) to send the RAR team to Greece to provide spay/neuter for the charity Desperate Greekies. We have been asked to do more spay/neuter, particularly in Crete via our sister charity Animal Spay Neuter International.

"World Stray Animals Day" Thank You »

RAR received this thank you letter for funding 150 spay/neuter procedures to Pro Animals Romania for World Stray Animals Day. The event occurred for three days, between April 2 and 4, 2012. We would like to share Patricia Paraschiv's account of the event:

Hi Nancy,

We would like to express our huge thanks to you and the RAR team for choosing to organize the Spay/Neuter campaign in Pro Animals Romania animal shelter between 2-4th of April, 2012. Pro Animals Romania has about 600 rescued animals in its care and have been running neutering campaigns for the dogs during the past years since 2000, as well as intense adoption and school education programmes. We were so happy to hear about the 150 free spaying offered by RAR! It was such a great thing to be able to celebrate the World Stray Animals Day on 4th of April together by offering free spaying to Tg-Jiu community. Although the schedule was very crowded those days, it was all worth it!

I was so happy to see so many owners bringing their pets to be neutered, meaning that they really understood the importance of neutering as the only way to reduce suffering and as the only efficient and humane way to limit the stray dogs population! I have tried to schedule everyone for spay so that we can run our programme without problems, but people continued to come with pets asking to have them spayed. Also, so many people were calling asking if we have more free places that I had to start a new 'waiting list' for the next similar campaign. We also announced local mass-media about this event so reporters and journalists came in Pro Animals shelter in such a big number, interested in the campaign. They filmed, they took photos and interviews of the RAR medical team, PAR president as well as of pet owners.

In total there were 90 animals spayed: 77 females, 5 males, and 8 cats.

Here are the photos taken during this event.

Besides the neutering there appeared a case that was successfully solved by the RAR medical team. A female from the public shelter was neutered by the vet from the City Hall Shelter one week before the Neutering Campaign. During this period we saw she was feeling bad so we took her into our shelter to treat and supervise her. Next morning we came to the shelter, but before the neuterings started we saw her cage full of blood and she was covered in blood as well, with her intestines out as the sutures broke. As she was very weak already, lost a lot of blood and part of her intestines eaten, her case became an emergency one. After the anesthesia, the surgery started and it took some time until everything was done. Taking into account what she passed through surgery was just the first, and most important, step for her recovery. Although at the beginning her chances for her to live were so small, luckily, because of the successful surgery and good postoperative care in just a few days, her health started to improve and now she has fully recovered. Big thanks to the RAR medical team for this successful case.

Thank you, RAR team, for offering free Neutering/Spaying campaigns and doing such great work! By offering free neuterings/spayings to owners who can't afford to go to a private vet and would otherwise abandon the unwanted litters on the streets that most of them would suffer to death, you make such a difference for the life of those animals! Keep up the good work!

Lots of hugs,
Patricia Paraschiv
